The first dorsal is enlarged in the form of a sail, with numerous black spots. The sailfish's front is squared off, highest at its midpoint adn the pelvic fins very narrow. The sailfish's body is covered with embedded scales, blunt at end.

Mostly found offshore in South Florida near the Gulf Stream, off the Panhandle of Florida near the 100 meter fathom line. Sizes, is up to 7 feet and up to 115 pounds and can swim up to 50 knots. Sailfish feed on the surface or at mid-depths on smaller fishes and squid.
